The internet has revolutionized our life in many ways. While many believes governments are in charge of funding internet, others argue the burden of accessibility to the internet must not be on the shoulder of governments. In my view, government should not evade developing the internet.
On the one hand, government ought to focus its attention on more wide-ranging issues. Governments usually suffer from budget deficit so that dedicating money to crucial sector must be priority for them. Indeed, there are much more important sector to invest such as, health care system and public transport infrastructure. Moreover, in some case, expenditure on the internet is money-consuming. For example, in my country, Iran, the government has pay a huge sum for developing fiber cables to increase the bandwidth while the previous internet architecture meet all demands and a great deal of bandwidth are left useless.
On the other hand, investment in the internet provides job opportunities. Nowadays, digital trades make up the major proportion of the modern economy so that lubricating the wheels of the internet results in economy growth. For example, amazon website, the greatest retailer in the world, which send items to all around the world hires tens of thousands of workers. In addition to economy, expanding the internet is a moral duty for governments. same as free health care, free education and drinking water, the internet is categorized as a basic need for residents by the UN. Moreover, internet shutdown endanger many lives. For example, people who get stuck in uncharted mountains or remote deserts will get dead, if they have no accessibility to the internets and the underperforming governors are responsible for their lives.
In conclusion, despite deficit budget and cost of developing the internet, expanding the internet is must not option for governments. So, government must take a matters of the internet.
