Silvio Berlusconi has described his decision to sell Milan to Chinese investors was ‘painful but necessary.’
The 79-year-old has brought his reign as Rossoneri President to an end by agreeing to allow Yonghong Li to complete a €740m takeover at San Siro.
Speaking briefly to a reporter, the former Italy Prime Minister also revealed he accepted a cut-price valuation of the club so long as there was a commitment to invest in new players.
“The sale of Milan was a painful decision but a necessary one,” Berlusconi told media agency Agi.
“I gave up a portion of the value as long as there was a commitment to invest.”

Milan Coach Vincenzo Montella has thanked Silvio Berlusconi for everything he has done as Rossoneri President.
It was announced on Friday that the 79-year-old is selling the club to a Chinese consortium after 30 years in charge at San Siro.
Speaking to journalists at Malpensa airport after returning from Milan’s pre-season tour of the United States, the tactician also admitted that he didn’t know much about the Rossoneri’s new owners.
“It’s still not very clear to me. I am the Coach and I do the coaching, nothing else,” Montella said.
“Thanks to Berlusconi for how much he has done in 30 years at Milan, we’ll see what the investors want to do.
“We are working with Galliani on the transfer market, we have clear and shared ideas. Galliani will do the best he can to improve the team.”
