After having scored the last penalty on Sunday against Roma at Foxborough Stadium and opening his Juventus goal tally (unofficially) Douglas Costa spoke with Gazzetta’s Fabiano Della Valle to discuss his ambitions and his arrival at Juventus.
Douglas Costa, tell us about your initial reaction at Juventus?
“I feel good, here we tried a lot and hard, I just started reaching the levels of my teammates. I know I am a little bit behind and I must work to arrive at even higher levels, to be as strong as possible and as fast as possible.”
Higuain has already called you his favourite player for assists and dribbling, and your former teammate Luiz Adriano has stated that Higuain will score 40 goals with you by his side. Do you feel up to the challenge?
“Higuain is a champion and a great teammate. Wherever I go I am the striker’s best friend: it happened with Luiz in Ukraine and with Lewandowksi at Bayern. You see that with me they are comfortable.”
Pjanic has stated that with you we will see madness this season: is this true?
“I love playing with players of Pjanic’s quality. At Bayern there was Thiago Alcantara: I studied him and I learned a lot from him. At Juve I have been impressed by the quality. I hope to add my creativity.”
Why did you choose Juventus?
“Because in three years they have played 2 finals in Europe, they are the team with the most will and the highest probability to win the Champions League. I want to enter into Juventus’ history. A year away from the World Cup I couldn’t have chosen a better club.”
Therefore you came to Torino to win the Champions League?
“I am here to win everything, including the Champions.”
What is your preferred position?
“At Shaktar I played 5 years on the right, at Bayern with Guardiola I played in every position. It is better to play on the right to shoot and on the left to cross.”
Speaking of Guardiola: In Germany he was your coach and he wanted to bring you to Manchester City?
“After many years I wanted to avoid everyone thinking that I played because he was the coach. I wanted to join Juventus to create new experiences, and to learn a different style of football.”
What do you think of Allegri in your short time together?
“He is a coach who talks a lot. He understands my potential and I can feel his trust. I have positive sensations, I think we will go far with this coach and this squad.”
With Ancelotti, you didn’t play a lot, what didn’t work?
“I feel as though he didn’t have enough time to see me, from my time with the National team and my injuries. I didn’t prepare for the season with him, something I had done with Guardiola. However, I had a good relationship with Ancelotti: we are still friends.”
Serie A: Who can stop Juventus from winning a seventh straight title?
“Juve is like Bayern, it is a big team and everyone will give their all to win against us. Juve has tons of fans and is known around the World. In Italy football is played tactically perfect, it is difficult to beat the defence. There needs to be patience, Milan and Inter have gotten stronger but Juve has the right players to win again.”
What memories do you have of Juventus?
“I knew Emerson, I remember the legendary squads of the 1990s-2000s, with Zidane, Del Piero, Ibrahimovic, Nedved.”
Did you have an idol as a child?
“My favourite player was and always will be Ronaldinho. We are connected through Gremio: He played there and I started my career there at 12 years old.”
Is Alex Sandro helping you to acclimatize?
“Since we are both Brazilian we have the same affinity, we understand each other on the fly. He helps me
Who dribbles better?
“Me. But he defends better.”
